Amateur Radio in Pittsburgh goes digital

Pittsburgh has joined a growing number of cities that are moving into the next phase of communications on the VHF/UHF amateur bands. The North Hills Amateur Radio Club has purchased and installed a repeater that is entirely digital. Using the new D-Star protocol developed in Japan and marketed by Icom this system converts analog audio spoken into the microphone into a digital bit stream which is then transmitted to other radios in the system. In addition once this information is in this form it can be networked to other repeaters and other networks. There many unique features with this type of operation that open up a new world of expansion.
