Radio Shack reports drop in earnings

Here is an interesting tidbit that I got from the SCAN-L mailling list.

This morning local newspaper has a report by the Associated Press "Radio Shack Earning Drop"

Apparently RS experienced a 62% drop in it's 4th quarter earnings & plans to close 400 to 700 stores as well as 2 distribution centers (Charleston SC & Southhaven MS)

Overall Radio Shack had $1.67 billion in revenue.

Hobbyists should be on the lookout for very good deals on scanner equipment in the future. Also I wonder how other "mail order" houses that support hobby radio sales are doing? With energy prices high, as well as other uncertainties, I would imagine that their sales would be down a bit.

Should prove interesting to see what stores are closed in the future. I would say that there's going to be a greater opportunity for RS franchise type operations, but as with any business endeavour, it's not your interest in the hobby that's important but your business savy on whether this is a good deal!!!!

Local news from the ham community

Thanks to Dennis, KB3HPC, web master for the North Hills Amateur Radio Club for this information. I had met to talk with Jack, W9UK, prior to his departure to get the details of the DXpedition but did not manage to catch up with him.

The following local hams will be on a DeXpedition to the Colony of
Montserrat, Leeward Islands in the Caribbean.

W9UK - Jack with callsign VP2MUK
W3WH - Bill with callsign VP2MWH
K3VX - Larry with callsign VP2MVX

They are there for a contest, but will be available as follows:
February 15, 2005 through February 21, 2006, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, on or about sideband frequencies:

3.782MHz, 7.280MHz, 14.265MHz, and 18.130MHz.

Mike King, WA3PYU, is looking for volunteers to help with communications for
the St. Patrick's Day parade. The parade is downtown. Volunteers are needed from approximately March 11 from about 7:00 AM until ?? not quite sure - I think 10:00 or 11:00 depending on where you are located.

This is a fun event and a low key way to get ready for the upcoming public service season.

If you are interested give Mike a call at (412) 481-1149.

Meeting of the Oblong Table this Wednesday

Well as stated on the Sunday evening net we are going to res erect the venerable “Meeting Of The Oblong Table” and we are going to start this Wednesday evening February 15th 2006. We will gather at Kings Family Restaurant at the edge of the parking lot for Waterworks Plaza on old Rt. 28 just north of the Highland Park Bridge.

There we will have a good round of discussion on scanning and monitoring the bands. All of this while intaking our favorite liquid libation and for those so inclined some dinner and or desert. Now I understand that you might not find your exact FAVORITE liquid libation at Kings but I'm sure there will be something that will be acceptable to the pallet.

Meeting begins at 07:30 PM local time but that is not chiseled in stone. Arrive when you can if you are planning to attend. I have a doctors appointment that afternoon and depending on the outcome of that I may or may not be able to be there. I do hope though to get to see everyone.
